PH Confirms 3rd Omicron Variant From OFW Returning From Qatar

PH CONFIRMS OMICRON – The 3rd case of the new omicron variant in the Philippines has been confirmed.

Earlier, the Philippines warned that the new variant will undoubtedly enter the Philippines. Furthermore, health experts believed that it would be a matter of when.

Previously, the Philippines confirmed the first 2 Omicron cases. And, those that tested positive showed asymptomatic signs of COVID-19. Likewise, the latest person to have the virus was as well.

According to a report from ABS-CBN, the patient was an OFW returning from Qatar. Moreover, the Department of Health (DOH) said that he also had a travel history in Egypt.

Officials took his sample on Dember 4, and the results were released a day after. However, the man tested negative for COVID-19 on December 19 following several RT-PCR tests.

Because of this, he was immediately sent home to his family in Cavite, his hometown. Vergeire said that the man underwent a complete quarantine procedure in Cebu.

As per the article, the patient was identified as a 36-year-old male who arrived at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport on November 28, 2020. Meanwhile, contact tracing is still going on for the previous patients who tested positive.

Currently, it is still unclear whether the new Omicron variant is more transmissible. Additionally, it is also unclear if the new variant is more severe compared to those of the Delta variant. However, preliminary research into the variant suggests increasing hospitalization rates in South Africa.

The Philippines has listed several countries in its Red List. Countries included in the list have travel restrictions to and from the Philippines.
