Typhoon Odette: 75 Reported Dead After Super Typhoon Batters Visayas, Mindanao

Death Toll From Super typhoon Odette Climbs to 75 – Officials

TYPHOON ODETTE – At least seventy-five (75) people have been reported dead after super typhoon Odette (international name: Rai).

The Philippines is one of the world’s most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. It is hit by an average of 20 typhoons every year.

Super typhoons typically wipe out infrastructures, homes, and harvests in already impoverished areas. Last December 14, Odette (Rai) entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). It then intensified into a typhoon on Wednesday morning, December 15.

Odette is the strongest typhoon to hit the country this year. Based on a report from Inquirer, more than 300,000 people fled their homes as the typhoon devastate southern and central regions of the archipelago.

The typhoon ripped off roofs, destroyed concrete power poles, and knocked out electricity and communications in many areas. It also left more than 70 people dead.

Bohol Governor Arthur Yap said on his official FB page that the mayors on their island had reported forty-nine (49) deaths in their towns. That took the overall number of reported deaths to 75. He said 10 people were still missing and 13 were injured after typhoon Odette.

“Presently, communications are still down, proof of which only 21 Mayors out of 48 have reached us. They have reported at least 49 deaths from their towns with 10 missing and 13 injured.”

There’s also widespread destruction on Dinagat Islands, Siargao, and Mindanao Islands. Dinagat Governor Arlene Bag-ao said their islands have been leveled to the ground by Odette.

We have yet to establish communication and access among the 7 municipalities to know the extent of the damage. Our landscape in the aftermath is reminiscent, if not worse than when Yolanda hit our province,” she said.
