Mayor Isko Moreno Speaks Stand on South China Sea Issue
MAYOR ISKO MORENO – The presidential aspirant and Manila City Mayor revealed another plan if he will win as president in the Election 2022.
The territorial dispute between the Philippines and China is one of the issues that has yet to be resolved for several years now. Both countries have strong claims over the South China Sea.
In 2016, the decision of the Arbitral Tribunal was out and it sided the Philippines on its sovereignty rights but the said verdict was not honored by China. The Chinese government continues to assert its ownership over the disputed island and there were several instances when their vessels were spotted in the said area.
To this, the presidential aspirants for the Election 2022 have given their stand. As for Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, he is planning to boost the naval forces of the country.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, if he wins president in 2022, Mayor Isko Moreno assured that he will not allow other countries to bully the Philippines. He also stressed that PH has to show the world that it is willing to fight for the disputed island in a civilized but firm way.
The Manila Mayor told Kyodo that he plans to buy more ships and boost the resources of the navy and the coast guard on the western seaboard facing South China Sea. Furthermore, he also plans to call for support for the Philippines to other parties to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea over the territorial dispute citing the decision of the Arbitral Tribunal.
Mayor Isko is on to a “fearless” assertion of the rights of the Philippines on the disputed waters. With regards to the pursuit of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the current administration’s war against drugs, the Manila City Mayor said that he would allow it and would cooperate with the international body.
