Power Consumer Expresses Disappointment After Electricity Bill Drastically Increased
A power consumer gas expressed his disappointment after his electricity bill multiplied three times although he had no additional appliances.
A Meralco customer named Kaydek Jebulan was surprised after his regular P1, 000 electricity bill jumped to P4, 000. He has no additional appliances at home but his power bill drastically increase.
Kaydek revealed that he is just using two LED bulbs, two electric fans, television and a washing machine. The latter starts to notice the irregularities on his electric bills last January 2021.
Initially, the customer thought it was just normal due to the sudden increase of power rate but several months have passed and his bills remain the same. Last August 2021, he contacted the power company regarding his concern.
Meralco launched an investigation and discovered that Jebulan’s meter and his neighbor Leonila dela Cruz accidentally exchanged. Dela Cruz reiterated that Meralco should be the one responsible for the incident.
After learning the incident, Kayden did not pay his electric bill for the next three months and it reached to P11, 000. He just wanted to settle the issue and refused to pay the amount.
“Gusto ko pong mangyari ma-settle yung mga binayaran namin mula February. Last po nagbayaad kami kasi three months na po akong hindi nagbabayad eh… Hindi namin kinonsume [consume] ‘yon, ‘di namin talaga babayaran ‘yon. Lapses po ng Meralco ‘yon,” Jebulan said.
Meralco spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga said that the mistake is called “unfortunate incident” and assured that it was an “isolated case”. The firm will be accountable for the incident.
Zaldarriaga promised Jebulan to fix the bill and trying to resolve some technical issues regarding the line connection.
