Online Seller Loses Thousands of Products After Scammer Uses Fake Proof of Payments
Authorities are now on the hunt against a scammer who uses fake proof of payments to swindle an online seller who loses thousands of products.
According to a GMA News story, an internet merchant lost thousands of pesos in product and money after being duped by a scammer who used forged evidence of payment. Jessa Macaraig, a businesswoman, said she gave Samgyupsal items to two different customers last week.

When she discovered that a bogus proof of payment was being mailed to him, it was too late. The scammer allegedly placed an order for P10,000 worth of goods, then cancelled it and placed another order for P8,000.
“Kunwari po P10,000 tapos sabi niya ah pa-cancel na lang ng parang worth P2,000, so ibabalik ko yung P2,000. Tapos yung worth ng products na ibibigay ko sa kanya is P8,000 so kumita pa siya sa akin,” said Macaraig.
Because she was shown a screenshot of the proof of payment that was reportedly deposited in her bank account, the victim assumed the fraudster had already paid. However, because she was unfamiliar with the internet banking system, she did not instantly check if the deposit was legitimate.
Because the scammer also scheduled the delivery rider, Macaraig was unable to determine the scammer’s address because her phone number had been banned. Undersecretary of the Department of Trade (DTI) Ruth Castelo cautioned online vendors and even buyers to verify online payments carefully. The DTI is willing to assist Macaraig.
“We encourage also online banking kasi real time for the online sellers machecheck na agad nila kung may nadeposit talaga sa kanila or na-transfer sa kanila yung bayad ng buyer,” Castelo said.
