Bato Reacts To Ressa Nobel Peace Win: “Huwag Bigyan Yan”
BATO ON RESSA NOBEL WIN – Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa said that he adamantly votes against giving journalist Maria Ressa a Senate Medal of Excellence.
Recently, Ressa was given the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote press freedom in the Philippines. Because of this win, Ressa became the first Filipino individual to receive the highly prestigious award.
As such, Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon said Ressa automatically qualifies to be given the Medal of Excellence due to a state resolution. According to the resolution, Filipinos who set “the highest standards of excellence, nationalism, and virtue that their fellow countrymen can aspire for”, should receive the medal.
But, when asked about this, Bato said that if he was given the option, he would vote twice against giving her the medal. Based on an article from ABS-CBN, the Senator said:
Bakit ko ipo-proclaim yung ginawa ni Maria Ressa? For what? Nanalo siya ng Nobel Peace Prize dahil sa kaniyang laban for freedom of expression, for freedom of the press. Bakit, meron bang ongoing suppression of press freedom here in the Philippines?
Furthermore, Bato said that he’d ask Ressa to give one single media practitioner that was jailed by the government because of their criticisms against it.
In the previous year, Ressa, along with a researcher was charged with cyber libel after linking a businessman to illegal activities. Furthermore, the government shut down media giant, ABS-CBN.
But, for dela Rosa, these events were not issues of press freedom.
“Ang purpose naman dun is hindi para i-suppress ang press freedom. Alam ko ang ginawa ng Congress. Hindi nila yun ginawa para i-suppress ang press freedom, kundi para i-address ninyo yung mga issues na binato sa inyo.
