Bantay Bigas Group Says Rice Prices Remains High

Rice Prices Remains High After Farmers Dropped Prices, According to Bantay Bigas Group

The rice watchdog group Bantay Bigas said that the prices of rice remains high in some markets after farmers dropped its price.

Bantay Bigas spokesperson Cathy Estavillo has expressed the group’s disappointment regarding the high prices of rice. The lowest price of rice is P38 per kilogram, which is quite high especially during this harvest season.

“Nananatiling mataas ‘yung presyo ng bigas sa merkado given na anihan na ngayon at the same time napakababa ng presyo ng palay na pamimili ng mga traders at millers sa mga magsasaka,” Estavillo said.

The group said that it is contrary to the government’s promise to cut the price of commercial rice per kilogram. The rice prices continue to increase due to the imported rice products brought by the rice tarrification law.

Estavillo also reiterated that a farmer in Iloilo is selling rice around P9 to P10 per kilogram. She also said that entrepreneurs should observe the rule of thumb when pricing products.

“Gamit ang rule of thumb, kung nabili ng P14 ‘yung palay ng mga magsasaka ay dapat merong P28 na bigas sa merkado. Kung P16, dapat P32. Wala tayong nakikita,” Estavillo added.

Watchdog is also challenging Agriculture Secretary William Dar to visit rice farms and check the situation of farmers especially the small ones. The group keeps on pushing their request to junk the Republic Act 11203 or Rice Liberalization Law.
