John Arcilla was not able to personally accept his recent Best Actor trophy
Prominent actor John Arcilla was hailed as the 78th Venice Film Festival Best Actor but he was not present during the awards night because of this reason.
John is now one of the Filipino actors who have been recognized internationally. His recent award was for the movie On The Job: Missing 8 by award-winning director Erik Matti.
When John’s name was announced as this year’s Best Actor, it was Direk Erik who went up on the stage and got the Volpi Cup trophy. John Arcilla gave his acceptance speech through video conference.
In a recent article in Inquirer, the actor revealed the real reason why he was not able to go to Venice when his director, co-star Dennis Trillo, and producer Quark Henares were there to attend the event personally.
John said that it is because of the little support that the entertainment industry receives. We are ambassadors of the country, but why do I feel like we are not getting enough support or that we are not being recognized as an important sector?” he said.
The actor explained that if he went to Venice, he had to spend 14 days in quarantine when he comes back. “But I decided to decline because I couldn’t afford to lose 14 days in quarantine when I come home. Organizers of the festival have agreed to shoulder my business class airfare and my stay in a hotel with the actors from Hollywood. I decided not to leave in order to be of help to the show because we are currently airing hand-to-mouth,” he said.
He elaborated that their shooting for Ang Probinsyano has a very tight schedule. It means that sometimes what they shot in the morning will be aired at night. He asked the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases if he could be permitted to just spend five or seven days in quarantine but his request was not granted.
The actor stressed that he would only spend three days in Venice but he would “endure quarantine for 14 days!” In addition to this agony, he will be the one who will “shoulder the expenses” in his stay in quarantine.
With this, John Arcilla said that if the handling of the pandemic is better, the situation will be much better and things will be easier.
