Environmental Groups Ask President Duterte to Ban Single-Use Plastics

Environmental Groups Calls President Duterte’s Attention to Prohibit Single-Use Plastics to Address PH Waste Problems

Several environmental groups asked President Duterte to ban single-use plastics to address the alarming waste management problem.

The green groups sent a letter to the Office of the President and appealed to prohibit Filipinos to purchase single-use plastics. The groups made their appeal due to the worsening garbage problem in the country.

The letter also asked President Duterte to order the National Solid Waste Commission to release the list of non-environmentally accepted products and packaging (NEAPP) in line with the Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.

The Republic Act 9003 has been passed this 2021. The agency also agreed to include plastic straws and stirrers on the list. However, NEAPP has yet to release the list of the plastic products.

The groups think that it is impossible to pass the law because there are still some pending bills regarding the ban of single-use plastics. The movement of pending bills in the Senate are too slow, according to the letter.

“The current pace of the 18th Congress and the National Solid Waste Management Commission worsens the already alarming state of the plastic crisis in our country. We have to immediately ban single-use plastic to end the plastic pollution,” the group said.
