Apprentice Seaman of Coast Guard Arrested Over Alleged Extortion to Applicants

Authorities arrested a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) apprentice seaman after he was accused of extortion towards PCG applicants.

The non-officer was captured reportedly extorting money from PCG applicants in Zamboanga City after one of his victims complained about his illicit behavior, according to PCG. For his speedy service, apprentice seaman Aldasher I Anni was allegedly asking for P85,000 from the applicants.

The apprentice’s modus operandi is to expedite the release of medical and dental clearances without requiring evaluation permission. PCG Intelligence Operatives and the Philippine National Police carried out the operation at a hotel on Veterans Avenue in Zamboanga City.

Authorities also recovered P1,000 in marked money as well as P130,000 in boodle money. Anni was taken to Police Station 7 in Sta. Maria for documentation and proper disposition before to the filing of charges for violating the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act and the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.

Vice Admiral Leopoldo Laroya, the PCG Commandant, has also requested a probe into any other officers or non-officers who may have worked with Anni. According to Laroya, the PCG will never allow extortion or any other form of corruption among its employees.

He also warned Coast Guard personnel that unethical behavior would result in the loss of their dignity as public servants and the squandering of their years of devotion to the country.
