Comelec Likely To Extend Voter Registration Due To This
COMELEC – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) may extend its voter registration period past September 30, 2021.
According to Commissioner Rowena Guanzon, the Comelec is likely to tackle the extension of voters’ registration following the Senate’s adoption of SR 851. With this, Senators sought to extend the registration period until October 31.
Based on an interview with Teleradyo, Guanzon stated:
Pero iba naman ito ngayon, dahil sa news nakita ko, ang buong Senado ay may resolution na. So, sigurado naman si Chair Abas i-a-agenda niya ‘yan para pag-usapan
(This is different because I can see in the news the entire Senate has this resolution. So, it is likely that Chair Abas would include this in our agenda)
But, Guanzon highlighted that the determining factor for the extension would be the directors. “What really will determine kung kaya ba ‘yan ng Comelec kung i-e-extend ‘yan o hindi, ‘yung mga director ang tatanungin. Kaya pa ba nila?”, she said.
Guanzon explained that the majority of commissioners had earlier voted not to extend the registration period. She stressed that the decision was primarily due to tight schedules and preparations for the elections themselves.
Last time, ako lang bumoto na mag-extend. Majority ang ayaw. Naiintindihan naman natin sila dahil nga domino effect nga ‘yan
Meanwhile, Guanzon also noted that they may talk about the issue come Wednesday as the budget of the Comelec depends on the Senate.
