DENR Says Dolomite Still In Manila Bay, Only Rising Water Covering Sand

DOLOMITE STILL IN BAY – According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the dolomite in Manila Bay is not eroding.

The dolomite beach in the Bay is almost a year old. However, for marine science institutions, the same issues last year could still be seen today.

Among the many problems pointed out was how the dolomite continues to erode into the ocean. This issue led to the government continuing to refill the bay with new “sand”.

Recently, observations conducted by Ocean and the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute revealed that a part of the bay is already eroding. However, according to Environment Undersecretary Jonas Leones, this is far from the case.

He defended the project and stated that the institutions may have just observed the bay from their satellites. During an interview with ANC, he said:

They thought that the dolomite area is sinking. But the truth there is that, the dolomite is still there, the water is just rising up

According to Oceana and UP, the dolomite used as artificial sand in Manila Bay had been gradually submerging by hundreds of meters. But, Leonese emphasized that the “beach nourishment project” is simply submerging as the tide rises.

With the interventions we have installed in that area, we’re confident that even during strong typhoons and strong waves, I think they cannot move the beach nourishment area or it cannot be eroded“, he said.
