According to Sibicao, the explosion happened about 7:02 p.m. in a hut where he and his coworker, Rico Santos, were drinking at the time. Herrera allegedly took a grenade from his pocket and played with it before the explosion.
The grenade’s safety pin was unintentionally removed by Herrera when he was drunk, and it exploded a few seconds later. It was unclear why the victims had a grenade in their possession at the time.
Herrera was apparently blasted by the explosion, causing his body parts to split. Santos, according to the police, was injured after shrapnel was allegedly thrown at him.
Santos, another resident of the said barangay, was still being monitored at Batac’s Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center. The area where the incident occurred was discovered to be owned by Currimao Vice Mayor Sandra Cabreros, with Herrera serving as the caretaker.
