John Lloyd Cruz sported a different look in 2019 that received criticism
A-list actor John Lloyd Cruz had a “rugged” look back in 2019 and this did not please many showbiz fans.
From his younger years in showbiz, John Lloyd is known as the boy-next-door type. He always had that certain clean look that makes him loveable and pleasing to the eyes, especially to his female fans.
However, in 2019, when he was on his so-called showbiz hiatus, he was seen in public with a look that was far from what he is known before – long hair with a beard.
With this, he was judged and negative reactions were posted on social media. Little did his critics know, there was a purpose behind that and it is his love for his craft.
Based on the article in The Philippine Star it was for his role in the movie Historya Ni Ha directed by Lav Diaz. One of the co-stars of John Lloyd Cruz, Hazel Orencio shared the story behind that rugged look of the A-list actor.
“Back in 2019, so many things were said about JLC and this look. He kept mum, never said a word, never reacted,” Hazel said in her Facebook post. She pointed out that people who criticized Lloydie because of his appearance did not realize that he is an actor and it was a preparation for the said project.
“He didn’t cut his hair and he made his beard grew as per Lav’s instruction. He immersed in the role of Hernando Alamada, a ventriloquist who used to work in cruise ships as an entertainer,” she said.
John Lloyd’s character in the film is “recluse, never talks.” His doll Ha was the one doing the talking for him and for Hazel, this was a valid excuse for the actor to be quiet despite all the negative reactions that he got. It was also challenging for him to play as a ventriloquist which he has never done before but according to Hazel, John Lloyd Cruz was “able to pull it, and for us who’ve been with him on this journey, he delivered as always, with flying colors.”
