PNP Preps Cops For Potential Granular Lockdowns Says Eleazar

PNP PREPS FOR GRANULAR LOCKDOWNS – Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Guilermo Eleazar ordered police to begin preparations for a possible Granular Lockdown scenario.

Amid the surge of COVID-19 cases in Manila, the province could possibly see more lockdowns targeted toward specific areas. However, the government recognizes that the economy also needs to recover.

With this, Granular lockdowns provide a way for authorities to consider adjustments amid the coronavirus surge. In a statement, the police chief said he had instructed police commanders to coordinate with local government units for a uniform protocol.

According to an article from GMA, Eleazar said:

I have tasked police commanders to start coordinating with local government officials and initiate discussions regarding the possible implementation of granular lockdown starting next month

However, Eleazar acknowledged that the granular lockdowns are still at the proposal stage. Still, he emphasized that preparations need to be made just in case it does push through.

Furthermore, he said that he does not want to cause confusion to the Filipino people. “This is just a proposal but it is better to make preparations in advance so as not to cause confusion that could lead to misunderstanding“, he said.

Undersecretary Epimaco Densing III said at the Laging Handa public briefing that a government sub-technical working committee advocated abandoning bulk lockdowns and instead implementing granular lockdowns where appropriate.

Currently, the number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines has reached 1,916,461 cases. On Friday, officials reported 17,447 new infections. Meanwhile, the number of active cases increased to 142,531.
