DTI Says Adobo Standards Not Mandatory for Local Households
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) clarified that the ‘Adobo standards’ were only for international promotions.
Last weekend, the agency announced their plan to create a technical committee that would standardize Filipino dishes, starting with the famous adobo. The suggestion garnered criticisms from the online community.
DTI said that the Bureau of Philippine Standards has started to develope a Philippine National Standard for adobo last May 2021. The group is also planning to set a standard for some Filipino dishes including sinigang, lechon, and sisig.
Unfortunately, a lot of Filipino people lambasted the proposal for paying attention to unimportant things instead of prioritizing the problem about COVID-19 pandemic.
Recently, the agency clarified that the proposed standards for adobo are not mandatory for local households but for international promotions only.
“Obviously, this is not a mandatory standard because there are thousands or millions of ‘lutong adobo, the attempt is to define what we will promote internationally and not redefining what adobo is to different people now,” DTI said.

The department also encouraged the Filipino people to continue the creativity in cooking especially “Adobo”.
DTI’s technical committee is headed by Via Mare’s Glenda Barreto as Chairman, Food Writers Association of the Philippines chef Myrna Segismundo, and Hotel and Restaurant Association of the Philippines’ Raoul Roberto Goco.
