Pope Francis underwent a surgery in the intestine. He is confined at Gemilli’s Hospital in Rome. The said hospital is ran by the Catholic church and a part of its 10th floor is reportedly reserved for the Catholic leader.

The Pope is suffering from symptomatic stenosis of the colon. It is his first time to be admitted in a hospital since his election as the Catholic leader in 2013. His condition is common among older people and may result to abdominal pain, inflammation, a bloated stomach, and difficulty in the bowel movement.

The 84-year-old Pontiff was admitted in the hospital last Sunday. Prior to it, he gave his blessings to thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square. He also made an announcement about his trips in September. He is set to fly to Slovakia and Budapest.

Aside from his condition which led to a surgery in the intestine, Pope Francis is also suffering from sciatica, a condition that can be characterized by pain from the lower back along the sciatic nerve to the legs. Recently, Vatican released a statement following the Pope’s surgery.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni expressed that the Pope “responded well” to the operation. It was conducted under a general anesthesia. Previously, the Palace said that the surgery was scheduled and it was not out of emergency cases.
