A video uploaded on social media showed people running away as the ground broke support and crashed over a hillside road. According to an article from AFP, a Shizuoka prefecture official said: “The safety of 19 people is unknown”.
The landslide occured at around 10:30 a.m. with several homes being swept away. Before this, Atami City, saw heavy rainfall around 313 millimeters in under 48 hours. This was 242.5 millimeters above the monthly average in July.
