Mandaue PIO Wants Apology from Facebook Over Vulgar Mistranslation
The Public Information Office (PIO) of Mandaue wants an apology from Facebook over auto-translation that provides vulgar mistranslation in their post.
Mandaue City, Cebu’s public information office is pushing Facebook to apologize and fix the mistranslation in their tribute post for former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, who died yesterday. Based on the Mandaue City PIO, their post is written in Visayan language expressing half-mast.
“Mandaue City nag half-mast, agi ug pagbangutan sa kamatayon ni kanhi presidente Noynoy Aquino” reads the caption.
Meanwhile, on Facebook auto-translated, “Mandaue City is half-masturbating for the death of former President Noynoy Aquino.” The post went viral immediately on social media due to vulgar mistranslation.

The Mandaue PIO then air dismay towards Facebook over the baffled translation. “How this came to be is something entirely beyond us, we hope that it was just an unintended malfunction of one of its translation algorithms and not something intentional.
It added, “It is sad and regrettable that an occasion done to mourn and honor the memory of a former president’s passing has become viral for a totally different and obviously debasing reason.”
The PIO page hopes Facebook will take responsibility for this mistake and apologize to the sensitivities of the public, who only wanted to commiserate with Mandaue City in this time of grief from the passing of the former president of the Philippines.
