PNP Worried Of GCash, Cashless Transactions App In 2022 Elections
GCASH VOTE-BUYING – The Philippine National Police (PNP) said they are worried for a new form of vote-buying in the 2022 elections.
Throughout history, elections in the Philippines had its run-ins with vote buying. From small barangays to large scale national elections, vote-buying has been allegedly adamant in the country for years.
But, because of advancements in technology, especially in financing, the act of vote-buying could be done digitally. As such, the PNP said that cashless transactions could make vote-buying difficult to catch.
According to an article from CDN, both the Cebu Police Provincial Office and PNP Chief Guillermo Eleazar expressed the same issue. Earlier, the PNP Chief warned how candidates running in the 2022 elections may use digital platforms to conduct vote-buying.
Furthermore, with the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic, it would be a perfect opportunity for them to shift to a digital platform due to travel restrictions. Additionally, CPPO Director Engelbert Soriano cited how they do not possess the technology to intercept these transactions as it is done digitally.
However, he stressed that they would come up with ways to counter such transactions with the help of offices such as the Communications Technology Management (DICTM), the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Crime Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), and the Commission on Election (COMELEC).
