Huge Waterspout Seen in Coastal Area of Bredco Port in Bacolod City

WATERSPOUT – A huge waterspout has been caught on camera off the coastal area of Bacolod Real Estate Development (Bredco) Port in Bacolod City.

A tornado that occurs over the water is considered to be a waterspout. It is less “scary” compared to a land tornado because the force of friction is weaker over water.

Waterspouts have two classifications: tornadic waterspouts and fair-weather waterspouts. The fair-weather waterspouts occur frequently in coastal waters while the tornadic waterspouts typically occur during afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

Waterspouts could turn into land tornadoes if they reach the shorelines. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said fair-weather waterspouts and tornadic waterspouts are very rare in the country.

On Wednesday afternoon, May 19, 2021, a waterspout suddenly appeared near Bacolod Real Estate and Development Corporation (BREDCO) wharf. It scared the people who were near the location. Some people took out their phones to capture footage of the rare occurrence.

Based on a report from Sunstar, Executive Assistant Joemarie Vargas, cluster head of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) said it appeared less than a kilometer away from BREDCO wharf around 1 pm but did not make a landfall. The rare occurrence lasted for several minutes and they have not received any reports of damage.

“It’s a natural phenomenon (waterspout) that usually occurs when the summer season is about to end and signaling the start of the rainy season,” Vargas said.

According to the report, Joemarie Vargas said waterspouts appear when there is an Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). He said if that waterspout reached the land, it could damage structures or houses.
