PNP Chief Eleazar Pushes For Body Cams For Police Doing Anti-Drug Runs
ELEAZAR PUSHES FOR BODY CAMS – Enforcing the law is necessary, however, who’s going to make the police accountable for abuses?
Since then, the topic of body cams for police was highly debated in the Philippines. Logically, police upholding lawful justice have nothing to fear. However, talks about giving police body cams have had strong resistance.
Back in 2017, PNP Drug Enforcement Group chief Joseph Andol was quoted saying:
“For me, there really is no need for a body cam, our camera as policemen is God, ‘yun ang pinaka-camera natin na tinitingnan tayo”
But, as alleged abuses pile up throughout the years, most would say its high time that the PNP use body cams. As such, newly appointed PNP Chief General Guillermo Eleazar said:
“As much as possible, gamitin natin dyan. Well at least, during the implementation or service of search warrant… That was our comment or our suggestion to the justices of the Supreme Court when we had this dialogue with them“.
Furthermore, Eleazar emphasized that these body cameras need to be worn during regular patrolling of police. According to an article from Inquirer, the PNP distributed around 3,000 body cams to different city police stations. Moreover, the PNP said they aim to procure 30,000 more units.
