India Primed For New COVID-19 Wave As Country Lacks Medical Supplies
INDIA PRIMED FOR NEW COVID-19 WAVE – Following the massive spike in daily infections and deaths, a new COVID-19 wave may hit.
Currently, India is facing a critical shortage of hospital beds and oxygen for their patients. Furthermore, the country reported an all-time high number of deaths and daily cases.
Recently, 3,780 deaths were confirmed with 382,000 new cases confirmed. According to the International Red Cross, India has been suffered the hardest in South Asia when it came to COVID-19.
Unfortunately, K. Vijay Raghavan, the country’s main scientific advisor said India’s condition may get worse before it gets better. He warned that the country should prepare for another wave as the caseloads rises above 20 million infections.
During a news conference, Raghavan said:
Phase 3 is inevitable given the high levels of circulating virus. But it is not clear on what timescale this phase 3 will occur. We should prepare for new waves
Sadly, more admissions have been suspended in major hospitals with officials blaming lack of oxygen supplies. Based on an article from ABS-CBN, Delhi’s government said 700 tons of oxygen is required daily to catch up with the overwhelmed caseloads of hospitals.
But, despite the cries for help, the supreme court said they can only get 585 tons. Meanwhile, central government lawyers fought threats to issue contempt over refusals to provide oxygens. Moreover, they emphasized that the city merely needs 415 tons instead of 700.
Because of this, a Delhi High court that made the contempt issue accused government and politicians of “living in ivory towers” as the number of deaths rack up in the city. Additionally, they stressed that not providing enough oxygen was “a criminal act and not less than a genocide”.
