HASTEN TESTING FOR IVERMECTIN – A lawmaker called on the Department of Health and the Department of Science and Technology to speed up clinical trials for Ivermectin.
The antiparasitic drug commonly used on animals had gained traction in the Philippines. Among the many advocates for this drug is Anakalusugan Rep. Mike Defensor.
According to Defensor, the clinical trials for the drug was a matter of life and death. Based on an article from Inquirer, he said:
“Lives are at stake here. We could save many lives with the use of this popular P35-per-tablet experimental drug. The results of the trials ordered by President Duterte should be available soon“
Currently, there is no evidence that supports the Ivermectin’s efficacy against COVID-19. Furthermore, the World Health Organization and the Food and Drug Administration also cautions against its use.
But, Defensor emphasized how Remdesivir, despite WHO’s warning. “In fact, the DOH is spending millions in taxpayers’ money to procure Remdesivir and distribute it to government hospitals”, he added.
Moreover, he stated that the DOH and FDA can easily approve ivermectin if they wanted to. He mentioned that the FDA had already allowed its use for a patient-to-patient basis. As such, he questions why the DOH and the FDA have not permitted this on a wider scale.
