Pres. Duterte To Not Attend ASEAN Summit Personally, Palace Says

DUTERTE – Malacañang announced that Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte will not personally attend the ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Philippines is a member of several international leagues or organizations. One of these is the ASEAN or the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations. The said association of Southeast Asian nations tackle economic, security, socio-cultural, and political matters among others.

Usually, the members of the ASEAN have at least two (2) meetings every year. The said meeting which is called a “summit” is where leaders of different nations talk about the most important matters or problems at hand. It does not have to be involving all the member nations as long as it sparks international concern already.

Currently, the upcoming ASEAN Summit that will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia eyes to tackle about the issues surrounding Myanmar. Things are more on security issues and to finally gain back the stability in the country.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte will not personally attend the ASEAN Summit that is set to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Palace made the said announcement but did not specify the reason behind.

Meanwhile, according to presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) will surely be present in the ASEAN Summit in Jakarta. Based on the report, Christine Schraner Burgener, the special envoy of the United Nations, is one of those who will be attending the summit.

Currently, PH is facing a huge problem – the COVID-19 pandemic. A new spike in the cases of coronavirus in the country took place following the emergence of new variants of the virus. The healthcare system of PH is greatly challenged once again as several hospitals have already reached their full capacities.
