Manila Increases Contact Tracers As COVID-19 Surges In Metro

MANILA INCREASES CONTACT TRACERS – Due to the rising COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) deployed more contact tracers.

Recently, Manila has seen a significant increase in the number of coronavirus cases. In fact, the current daily cases is almost at last year’s peak. According to OCTA research, the sudden spike may be due to the presence of more contagious variants of the virus.

Currently, the Philippines has detected three “mutations of concern” – the South African, Brazilian, and the U.K. virus. However, the Department of Health (DOH) also reported the presence of a homegrown strain called the “P.3. Variant”.

As such, intensive efforts to contain the spread of the virus were done. According to an article from ABS-CBN, a total of 802 contact tracers were deployed from the DILG alone. Additionally, the MMDA also deployed 300 personnel as contact tracers.

To date, the total number of contact tracers in the Philippines is at 255,854. These contact tracers were then divided into 29,611 teams nationwide. Those included in the teams are “Municipal/City Health Officer, police and fire officers, Barangay Health Emergency Response Teams (BHERTS), volunteers from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and augmentation contact tracers from the DILG”.

As per the article, DILG Spokesperson Jonathan Malaya said that the public has nothing to worry about as a contact tracers work to ensure the spread of COVID-19 gets contained.

“So wala po tayong dapat ipangamba. Bukod pa sa 15,000 CTs that we rehired, mayroon nang nakadeploy na halos more than 200,000 CTs sa buong bansa galing sa mga LGUs na tututok sa mga COVID-19 cases sa mga lokalidad”.
