QUEZON CITY ARRESTS 3,597 – A day into the newly imposed curfew and the local government of Quezon city already rounded up over 3,597 violators.

Due to the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, several areas in the Philippines imposed a uniformed curfew. Among these areas was Quezon city who managed to arrest a total of 1,325 curfew violators and 2,264 health protocol violators.

According to an article from Inquirer, Mayor Joy Belmonte said that although there were arrests, the individuals were only brought to jail as a warning. During a press briefing, she explained:

Hindi po kinulong, hindi nilagay sa piitan, wala pong ganyan. Ang ibig sabihin lang ng apprehension ay natiketan at binigyan ng warning na ‘wag uulitin ang kanyang offense at violations”

Additionally, she emphasized that the arrests were made humane and no basic human rights were violated. “Humane at makatarungan at wala tayong nilalabag“, she said.

The recent surge in COVID-19 cases in the Philippines drew concern that a possible 11,000 daily cases spike may be recorded at the end of March if the trend continues. Due to this, local governments imposed a two-week liquor ban and re-adjust curfew hours.
