House Panel Approved Act Providing Stiffer Penalties to Drunk and Drugged Drivers

The act providing stiffer penalties to drivers who are drunk and under the influence of illegal drugs was approved has been approved in the third and final reading in the House.

By a vote of 203-0-0, House Bill 8914 or “An Act Providing for Stiffer Penalties for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Dangerous Drugs and/or Other Similar Substances,” was passed, Amending For The Purpose Republic Act No. 10586, Otherwise Known as the “Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013.”

Under the law, fines range from P50,000 to P100,000 and imprisonment for six months for violations if no one is reported injured. If anyone is injured in the incident, a fine of up to P150,000 to P250,000 will be set under Article 263 of the Revised Penal Code.

For violations in which one person is killed, fines and penalties range from P350,000 to P550,000 under Article 249 of the RPC. The non-professional driver’s license of the violator will also be confiscated.

Aside from that, it will be suspended for 18 months for the first violation and the license will be revoked for the second violation.  While the professional driver’s license of the violator for the first violation will be permanently revoked.
