No 2nd Wave Of COVID-19 Says WHO PH Representative
NO 2ND WAVE OF COVID-19 – Recently, the Philippines has seen an significant increase in the number of daily coronavirus cases.
According to the OCTA Research group, this may be due to the presence of undetected UK and South African virus strains spreading. Furthermore, cities such as Mandaluyong reported the presence of such strains followed by a 2x in the number of cases within a week.
However, according to Rabindra Abeyasinghe, the World Health Organization Representative to the Philippines, this is not a sign of a 2nd coronavirus wave. Based on an article from Inquirer, Abeyasinghe said:
I wouldn’t classify this as a second wave because if you’re talking of a second wave, we should have seen a complete flattening of the curve. And in the case of [Metro Manila], we didn’t see that kind of flattening
Instead of calling the increase of infections a “2nd wave”, he said it was more of a “spike”. He added that there was “no value in classifying it as a second wave”.
Currently, the Philippines has reported more than 3,000 daily cases. But, OCTA research warns that this could spike to 5,000 cases by the end of March if the trend continues.
