“The emphasis there is this is the only way to prevent the spread of the virus regardless of the variant,”

This came from a statement from Interior Undersecretary Epimaco Densing, according to a report from ABS-CBN News.

Through an ordinance, localities can impose sanctions such as imprisonment of up to 5 days, a fine and community service, among others.

“I may be suggesting those who violate may serve as what we call marshals in certain public areas in their locality to tell people to practice minimum public health protocols,”

Densing said that there was a need to reiterate its call to penalize quarantine violators as several people had become “complacent.”

For nearly a year into the pandemic, the Philippines recorded about 582,000 COVID-19 infections, which is among the highest in Asia. Over 12,000 people have died from the disease.

The government had been administering COVID-19 vaccines on Monday to health workers and uniformed personnel and trailing dozens of countries in starting its coronavirus vaccination rollout. The government used vaccines donated by China’s Sinovac Biotech.

Based on the report, health experts have raised concerns over the presence of 2 more variants of COVID-19: The UK variant B.1.1.7 and the South African variant B.1.351.

As of the moment, 87 cases of the UK variant have been recorded in the Philippines.
