Albay Parish Condemns People Who Humiliated Statues of Virgin Mary, Padre Pio

Some statues of saints in a church like Padre Pio and Virgin Mary in Legazpi City in Albay have been desecrated and defaced by an unidentified assailant.

In a report of GMA News, the statue of Padre Pio can be seen with his fingers and toes cut off, and his elbow broken. The statue of the Virgin Mary and the angels at her feet was peeled face off.

Police Executive Master Sergeant Guilbern Patacsil, Jr., of the Legazpi Police Public Information Office, is not the work of a sensible person. The culprit could not be identified because no one saw the incident and there was no CCTV in the area.

As a result, the police placed a patrol near the church and the church also installed CCTV. Based on the report, Patacsil said there are ordinances that really require CCTVs placed in establishments like shops and churches.

“May mga ordinance po na nire-require talaga na mayroon pong mga CCTV like sa mga establishment, mga tindahan… for purposes po na requirements ‘yon ‘pag nagre-renew sila ng mga permit nila,” said Patacsil.

Legazpi Bishop Joel Baylon hopes that the culprit will realize that he did something wrong with the statues. He said that “it was an act of vandalism indeed but it was not meant to be an act of religious sacrilege.”

“I would not interpret it that way. Sabi ko lang, sana ‘wag nang ulitin ‘yon at tsaka makadama rin ng responsibilidad ang mga gumawa,” said Baylon.
