New Virus Mutation In Cebu Expected Says Infectious Disease Expert

VIRUS MUTATION IN CEBU EXPECTED – According to an infectious disease expert, the “mutations of concern” in Cebu was natural.

A year into the coronavirus pandemic, several new strains of COVID-19 were detected. Early in January, Britain announced the detection of a new, more infectious strain of COVID-19. Along with this, South Africa and Brazil also had new coronavirus strains present.

However, according to Dr. Edsel Salvana, the director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the UP National Institutes of Health, the mutations found in Cebu were already expected.

But, he emphasized that in order to prevent its spread, further study is still required. Based on an article from GMA, he said:

Ang mutations na ito ay makaka-impact sa virus na mas makakatulong na siya ay mas lumaganap. Ngunit preliminary pa lang ito at kailangan nating tignan kung ganoon nga ang behavior

Recently, Cebu detected two coronavirus strains that are “mutations of concern” – N510y and E484K in SARS-COV-2. Fortunately, the Department of Health said the patients infected with these strains had now recovered from the virus.

Meanwhile, Salvana noted that the best way to prevent the spread of the virus is to impose proper health protocols. Additionally, he said that as the virus mutates, vaccines can also be modified to become effective against the new variants.

Most of the vaccines ay gagana pa naman sa COVID-19 mutations… Kung nawawalan na ng bisa, puwedeng dagdagan ang kasangkapan ng vaccine
