Violators of COVID Protocols Punished by Walking Like Zombies in Negros

Law enforcers in Negros Occidental forced COVID-19 health protocol violators to walk like zombies as their punishments.

Police in Silay City, Negros Occidental arrested 39 individuals who were caught violating the physical distancing protocol and mandatory wearing of face masks in public. The police force the violators to walk like a ‘zombie’ to remind them to observe social distancing.

According to Police Major Rollie Pondevilla, Silay police chief, the violators marched from the police station to the covered court while their arms are raised to observe a one-meter distance from each other.

Pondevilla said that these individuals were caught not wearing face masks in public places within the city. They were arrested for the violation of City Ordinance No.3, Series of 2020.

After their walk, a seminar was held in court while facing the coffin to remind them that coronavirus disease (COVID-19) could cause the death of anyone if they did not follow health protocols, Pondevilla said. He warned the offenders that if they were caught again, the police would file a case against them.

The Silay law enforcers have uploaded the video of the parade on social media. However, this action was criticized by the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), reminding police that parading quarantine violators are a “cruel and inhumane” punishment.

The CHR office in Region 6 will conduct an investigation of the video of the parade posted on social media. The commission said it would seek the side of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Silay and ask for their cooperation in addressing human rights concerns.
