DoE Offers Assistance For Filipinos Who Can’t Afford To Pay Electricity In Full

DOE OFFERS ASSISTANCE – Amid the coronavirus pandemic, many marginalized Filipinos continue to struggle due to the lockdowns.

Last year, over 5 million Filipino workers have lost their jobs due to the pandemic. Meanwhile, more informal workers pleaded for support as the lockdowns intensified.

This caused many to struggle with paying for their utilities such as water and electricity. Luckily, the Department of Energy (DoE) promised to provide support for Filipinos who can’t afford to pay their electricity bill in full.

According to an article from Manila Bulletin, Energy Chief Alfonso Cusi said that he gave his word to President Duterte that he’d support the Filipino people.

I have given my order to all the Distribution Utilities (DUs) to submit their programs and strategies that will help alleviate the lives of the lifeliners in these crucial times

Lifeliners are residents in the “low-income” captive market who can’t afford to pay at full. These households are determined via electricity consumption below a given threshold set by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

“As we grappled with the peak of COVID-19 transmissions last year, the DoE took proactive steps to help consumers, most especially those at the margins, keep afloat in the midst of grave health and livelihood concerns”

Currently, the DoE has directed electricity entities to observe grace periods and give staggered payment options for unpaid bills. Furthermore, this has been provided under the Bayanihan Law.
