A report from Panay News states that their swab samples were sent to the Philippine Genome Center for analysis to determine if they have the new and more transmissible B117 SARS-CoV-2 variant that was detected first in the country they were repatriated from, according to Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson.

British experts warned that the new COVID variant could lead to a 15x increase in infections in a month should it becomes the dominant variant in the country.

This means from over 30,000 new cases per month could surge to as high as about 300,000.

Lacson said that the infected repatriates, both are from Pontevedra, Negros Occidental, were under strict quarantine.

The two positive cases were among the five Negrenses from the UK who skipped the mandatory swabbing in Manila.

The other three, who were members of a family from E.B. Magalona town, were tested negative for COVID-19.

They allegedly hid their travel history and even declared themselves as locally stranded individuals or LSIs.

Lacson added that they are filing complaints at the National Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases due to the recent breach of protocols, based on the report.

“This incident also led us to the decision to maintain stringent health protocols on returning Negrenses.  They have to undergo swab test upon arrival to the province,”
