Vaccinationalism Delays Global Recovery As Poor Countries Still Lack Support
VACCINATIONALISM – Delays to global recovery from COVID-19 stems from vaccinationalism according to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
“Solidarity is Failing”. These were the words of Guterres as he laments a “heart-wrenching milestone” for the new coronavirus. A year into the pandemic, the number of deaths from the virus has topped two million.
Unfortunately, Guterres noted how the world is experiencing a “vaccine vacuum. He explained that rich countries are procuring the vaccines with haste. Meanwhile, the world’s poorest country’s had none at all.
As such, the UN Secretary-General emphasized how “Science is succeeding — but solidarity is failing“.
Additionally, Guterres heavily critiqued countries making vaccine deals even beyond their need. Although he didn’t name a specific country, Canada had reportedly overbought vaccines that could inculcate their population three times over.
