Netizens Question Nat’l Gov’t Sinovac Priority
NETIZENS QUESTION SINOVAC PRIORITY – Recently, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III announced securing 25 million doses of China’s Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine.
Since last year, Vaccine Czar Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. emphasized how the government wanted to prioritize the Sinovac vaccine. But, several reports revealed the vaccine was merely 50% effective against the virus.
Additionally, the vaccine was found to be more expensive than leading names such as Pfizer and Moderna which was found to be 94-95% effective. As such, Dr. Tony Leachon took to Twitter and asked:
How do we justify government’s order of Sinovac , which is less efficacious 50% , more expensive vs Pfizer ‘s 95% efficacy rate and Astra 70-90 % efficacy rate ?
Along with this, netizens called out the national government for prioritizing Sinovac instead of vaccines such as AstraZeneca. One user noted that the following cities already made deals to procure the vaccine at $5 a dose compared to Sinovac’s $60 price:
- Pasig City Quezon City
- Navotas City
- San Juan City
- Ormoc City
- Davao City
- Valenzuela City
“Duque announced they finally secured a COVID vaccine deal w/ China’s Sinovac. If some cities were able to do that with more effective vaccines of AstraZeneca, Pfizer and the likes, why can’t Duque andn Galvez do it?”, a netizen asked.
Looking closely at the trend, you’d see how netizens are confused yet not surprised at the government’s decision of purchasing Sinovac. Furthermore, the general consensus in social media is how the LGU was able to procure better vaccines at a lower cost than the national government.
