Meralco Set to Increase Charges in January Bill of Customers

Power Company Meralco Set to Increase Hike in January 2021

The Manila Electric Company or Meralco is set to implement an increase in the January bill of their customers.

On Friday (January 8, 2020), the power distribution company Meralco announced higher charges on their customer’s bill this month of January 2021. The increase has been announced after the back-to-back reductions in 2020.

Meralco announced that the overall rates would increase by P0.2744 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Residential consumers consuming 200 kWh might have an additional P55 in the total bill.

The electric firm set an increase due to the higher generation charge, which is now P0.3058 higher than December’s costs. Luzon’s power demand dropped due to the cooler climate over the past few months.

“Lower demand led to fixed costs from power suppliers being spread over lower energy volume, resulting in higher effective generation rates to consumers,” Meralco said.

The Power Supply Agreements and Independent Power Producers rates have increased by P0.2723 and P0.2428 per kWh due to the lower demand of the electricity. The Wholesale Electricity Spot Market charges dropped by P0.6135 per kWh.
