Cebu Devotees Observe 456th Fiesta Señor Celebration Amid COVID-19 Restriction

Cebu Devotees have already marked the start of the 456th Fiesta Señor celebration amid tight restriction to prevent spread of COVID-19.

On Friday morning (January 8, 2021), a huge amount of devotees in Cebu city have trooped to the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño to mark the start of the 456th Fiesta Señor celebration. The event usually draws thousands of devotees.

The Basilica’s administrators set a limit with the number of devotees who will attend the 2021 opening salvo to prevent the possible spread of the coronavirus disease. Only 1, 500 devotees are allowed to enter the vicinity to observe the physical distancing measures.

Cebu City Councilor David Tumulak said that devotees who could not enter the church can watch the Eucharistic celebration along the street surrounding the basilica. Huge screens are installed in the building.

The image of the Child Jesus was placed at the basilica’s outdoor Pilgrim Center wherein people could wave their hands. The people have also carried their own Sto. Niño statues during the first novena.

Basilica rector Fr. Pacifico Nohara Jr. was surprised due to the large numbers of devotees who attended the event amid the health crisis.

“This pandemic has changed the world. Many fear contracting the virus. Despite all these, we still gather here to manifest our faith. No one, not even the virus, can stop us from showing our love to the Sto. Niño,” Nohara said.
