PhilHealth Contribution Increase Does Not Sit Well on Some Members

PHILHEALTH CONTRIBUTION INCREASE – The increase on PhilHealth earned negative reactions from the members following corruption issues.

A huge part of the populace is a member of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation or more commonly called as PhilHealth. Every month or quarter, members contribute a certain amount to the institution.

In return, PhilHealth members may be financially assisted or covered in times of medical emergencies. There are cases wherein the institution can pay for a part of the hospitalization of a member or his or her beneficiaries.

However, this year 2020, PhilHealth was involved in a huge corruption issue that tainted the image of the institution a lot. It was after one of its former officials claimed that massive corruption is happening inside the institution.

Amid the investigation, several PhilHealth officials signed a bank secrecy waiver in line with the probe. Then-PhilHealth Chief Ricardo Morales also left his post over medical issues.

Charges were approved to be filed against several officials of PhilHealth due to the corruption issues. Undeniably, many members were alarmed that a huge part of the funds of the institution may have been taken and might put their membership at risk.

Truths be told that many people rely to PhilHealth for medical insurance. Thus, issues like it really make them hesitant on what might happen next.

Recently, a PhilHealth contribution increase was confirmed. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the premium rate will increase from 3% to 3.5% as per the Universal Health Care Law.

If you’re earning Php 10,000.00 and below every month, your contribution will be Php 350.00 from Php 300.00. According to the report, the said PhilHealth contribution increase earned negative reactions from other members.

“Hindi ako pabor doon. Ninakaw na nga ang pera ng mga tauhan eh. Dapat hindi tumaas, dapat bumaba pa nga eh,” Marcing Perlas, a maintenance worker, said.

On social media, PhilHealth also went trending following the increase. Many are not in favor of the increase set by the institution. Even some senators are not in favor of it.

“Matapos nilang ilustay at nakawin ang bilyun-bilyon dadagdagan pa nila ang sisingil sa ating mga kababayan na sadsad na sa gastusin? Anong kahibangan ito? Nakaw pa more?” Sen. Kiko Pangilinan said.
