BJMP Reports 90% Recovery Amongst Inmates Infected With Coronavirus
BJMP REPORTS 90% RECOVERY – Amid the coronavirus pandemic, one of the major concerns authorities had was the virus penetrating the Philippine penitentiary system.
Social Distancing has become one of the most advocated means of preventing the spread of the virus. However, this proved to be difficult considering the densely populated prisons in the Philippines, especially the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).
As such, health authorities raised the concern about a potential outbreak from within the walls of the BJMP. However, more than 9 months into the lockdowns, the BJMP reported that more than 90% of infected inmates recovered from COVID-19.
According to an article from GMA, BJMP spokesman Jail Chief Inspector Xavier Solda stated that there are only 88 active coronavirus cases left in the correction facility. Previously, there had been 1,987 reported cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.
“Tuloy-tuloy po ‘yung pagbuti ng mga pasyente po natin na na-infect particular diyan sa Davao City Jail“, Solda added. Furthermore, the spokesman said that amongst the 470 jails throughout the Philippines, only 10 require monitoring for the virus.
As such, Solda said that the BJMP hopes to eradicate the spread of the virus for both their inmates and personnel alike. Meanwhile, in terms of visitations, the spokesman said persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) can visit their loved ones via “electronic dalaw”.
