Young Saltwater Crocodile Caught At Turtle Islands In Tawi-Tawi
SALTWATER CROCODILE – A young saltwater crocodile was caught along the coast of Turtle islands in Tawi-Tawi.
According to Manila Bulletin, the reptile was caught by residents who failed to catch the older crocodile after it swam into the deepest part of the sea.
Turtle Island town Mayor Mohammad Faizal H. Jamalul said that a local resident of Barangay Likud Bakkaw caught the young crocodile at 7 AM on Monday near the village shoreline.
The mayor added that the older crocodile immediately swam into the deep portion of the sea after spotting local residents heading towards the area.
The reptile, with the scientific name Crocodylus porosus, measures at about 36 inches and is brackish, Jamalul added.
Based on the report, the mayor said that the residents tried to catch the reptile on 4 different occasions but failed due to the strength of the salt water crocodile.
“On Tuesday morning at about 7 a.m., the residents of the village were able to catch him but failed to catch the elder reptile,”
Jamalul clarified that the reptile did not harm the people living along the village.
“Probably, the reptile was just looking for a new habitat where they could live,”
He urged the officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to release the reptile into the sea three hours after its capture.
The release was witnessed by Mayor Jamalul, DENR officials, town officials, and the chief of the Municipal Tourism Office Miss Abrille Yusop Oraiz.
