South Korean Delivery Employees Say They’re Dying of Overwork

South Korean Delivery Employees Claim Some of Them Dying of Overwork

South Korean delivery employees say that they are dying of overwork and stressed out “We won’t be surprised here if one of us drops dead, too.”

A southern Seoul airplane hangar held a moment of silence before starting their work to remember their fellow couriers who reportedly passed away due to overwork. One of the couriers Choi Ji-na is expecting some of them may suffer the same.

Choi and other delivery workers in South Korea expressed their gratefulness for having a job amid the coronavirus pandemic. The employees are proud of delivering packages to their customers who prefer to stay at their home.

As of this writing, around 15 delivery couriers have already passed away. Some of the victims have complained of alleged unbearable workloads from dawn until past midnight. “The workload has become just too much,” Choi said.

In 2018, the South Korean President Moon Jae-in has already reduced the maximum workweek from 68 down to 52 hours to give the employees enough to rest. However, the couriers have to work for longer hours due to the pandemic.

A courier named Kim Dong-hee even picked up 420 packages leaving him no enough time to eat and wash up. One day he didn’t report for work and his colleagues found him dead and reportedly died due to heart failure.
