ANG WATAWAT – In this topic, we are going to know about one of the Sabayang Pagbigkas poems titled “Ang Watawat”.

ANG WATAWAT

A Sabayang Pagbigkas (roughly translates to Simultaneous Pronounciation in English) is a type of poem which, according to Jose Abad, is a congenial method of valuing the literature by means of having the choir speak in unison according to tone, strength or power. It is known in the English language as ‘Verse Choir’.

The poem we are going to read is one of the scripts that is used by performers in Verse Choir contests.

We are now going to read the poem Ang Watawat, which roughly translates to “The Flag”.

Here is the full text of the poem, according to this website:

Kaputol na kayo ng tagdan,
May tatlong bituin, sa gitna ay araw
Kaputol na kayo na may tatlong kulay
Iyan ang sagisag ng bayan kong mahal.

Tatlong kulay nito’y pula, puti’t bughaw
Sagisag ng giting, ng dangal, ng tapang;
Ang bitui’y Luzon, Bisaya’t Mindanao
Ang araw ay Kalayaan sa bayan ay tanglaw.

Banal na layuni’t malinis na budhi
Ang sinasagisag ng tatsulok na puti;
Pantay-pantay lahat ang magkakalipi
At iisang diwa, isang bansa, isang lahi.

Kung sa isang tagdan, bandila’y mamasid
Kasabay ng himig ng Pambansang Awit
Dibdib ay tutupdin, baya’y isaisip
Bayang Pilipinas! Bayang iniibig!
