NYC To Reopen Elementary Schools On December 7, Despite Rise In COVID-19 Cases
NYC TO REOPEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS – New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the city would reopen elementary schools on December 7 and offer in-person classes for special-needs students.
Amid the coronavirus pandemic, millions of students were forced to shift to remote learning. However, this poses several issues, especially for special-needs students. But, with the recent resurgence of COVID-19 in the city, many are left concerned regarding this decision.
Meanwhile, Mayor de Blasio explained that the reason for his decision was based on data showing COVID-19 seemingly sparing young children. As such, the city dropped requirements for schools to shut down if virus tests go over 3% for a week. Currently, NYC has a 3.1%.
According to an article from Inquirer, the Mayor said “we have so much proof now of how safe schools can be“. Furthermore, he said returning students would be required to take weekly COVID-19 tests.
Additionally, the mayor also explained that a five-day school week would be more appropriate, especially for schools with a space for social distancing. Still, this decision has become highly debated in cities across the globe.
As per the article, De Blasio said: “Just about every professional says the schools, especially K-8, should be kept open whenever it’s possible to keep them open safely“
