De Lima Pens Biden, Says Victory Over Trump Is Beacon For PH Democracy
DE LIMA PENS BIDEN – Senator Leila de Lima wrote a letter to President-elect Joe Biden, calling his triumph over current President Donald Trump a “beacon” for Philippine Democracy.
In a personal letter dated November 18, the detained De Lima expressed her respect and admiration as Biden becomes the projected winner of the 2020 U.S. elections. Within the letter, de Lima wrote:
We closely follow your words and speeches and find them speaking to us also. As you know, President Duterte is cut out from the same cloth as President Trump in their politics of lies, hate, and demonization, as well as in their cornucopia of insanities in between.
Furthermore, the senator emphasized that Trump’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic cost the lives of over 250,000 Americans. Additionally, she likened this to how President Duterte’s war on drugs “killed tens of thousands”.
Moreover, de Lima emphasized that Biden’s victory over Trump in the elections was a “beacon for our own democracy here in the Philippines”. She added, “At last, a Democrat gentleman, a capable leader, and a man of faith will again be leading the free world from the White House“.
Finally, she said that because of Biden’s win, hope in the Philippines to “reclaim democracy” is restored. “We believe that your presidency will guide and inspire us on how to reclaim our own democracy from hereon to 2022 when we also elect a new leader for our nation“, the senator said.
