Johnny Depp Denied Appeal Against “The Sun” For Wife Beater Libel Loss

JOHNNY DEPP DENIED APPEAL – Actor Johnny Depp was denied an appeal versus a UK Court after he lost the “Wife Beater” libel case against UK Tabloid, The Sun.

Furthermore, The Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts star was also fined £628,000 ($840,00, €705,000) to be paid to The sun as legal costs. Depp sued the Tabloid’s publisher News Group Newspapers Ltd (NGN) for claiming that he was physically abusive in his relationship with actress, Amber Heard.

Following his loss, Depp was ousted from his role as Grindelwald in Warner Brother’s Fantastic Beasts series. But, Depp announced he would file an appeal to the court.

Moreover, Judge Andrew Nicol, who presided over the libel case, dismissed the actor’s appeal and ordered the paying of the defendants’ costs. According to a report from ABS-CBN, the decision was made due to him not being persuaded by a “reasonable prospect of success”.

Depp was ordered to pay a fine of £520,000 of the defendants’ bill come December and another £108,235 come January 22nd in 2021.

The issue with the libel case started when Depp took notice of a 2018 article from The Sun which categorized the actor as a “wife-beater”. As per the report, the article asked if J.K. Rowling was “‘genuinely happy’ casting wife-beater Johnny Depp“.

Meanwhile, according to the judge, Amber Heard, sustained 12 out of 14 alleged instances of abuse because of Depp. However, despite the loss, Depp vowed that “his life and career will not be defined by this moment in time”.
