This came from a statement from Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, according to a report from GMA News.

Guevarra added that the bureau is working hard on the probe of the deaths of lawyers Eric Jay Magcamit and Joey Luis Wee, who are both shot to death.

Magcamit was slain along a highway in Palawan. He was about to head to a hearing last November 17. On the other hand, Wee was shot outside his office in Cebu City last November 23.

The Justice Secretary said that more field operatives have been deployed in the two areas to intensify the hunt for the culprits.

“The government is very much concerned about the increasing number of crimes committed against lawyers, prosecutors, and judges, and while these are generally considered to be part of the hazards of the profession, the government is committed to bring the perpetrators of these crimes before the bar of justice,”

Ever since President Rodrigo Duterte assumed office in 2016, over 50 lawyers, judges, and prosecutors have been killed in what seemed to be work-related cases.

Some lawyers expressed fears for their safety after they were red-tagged or accused of being communist rebels or fronts.

Edre Olalia, a human rights lawyer, said that the biggest irony is that they cannot even get justice themselves.

“There have been just way too many deaths among our own ranks and the biggest irony is that we cannot even get justice ourselves,”

Olalia added that the buck stops with the government, especially the type which has enabled a climate of violence in the country and emboldened  attacks on human rights defenders.
