THE HANDS OF THE BLACK – In this article, we are going to take a look at the summary of “The Hands Of The Black” written by Luis Bernardo Honwana.
The story begins with the narrator asking different people to explain why the hands of black people look lighter than the rest of their bodies. He begins by talking to his teacher which claims that their hands are lighter because humans once crawled on the ground akin to animals.
Furthermore, the teacher explains that because of this, their palms remain unexposed to light. Next, the narrator asked three religious men named Father Christiano, Señor Antunes, and Señor Frias. They provided the narrator with different religious explanations.
The narrator then tells the group that he once read a book that explained the phenomenon as the outcome of slaves picking cotton in Virginia. Finally, the narrator talks to his mother. She tells him how God created black people without lighter hands.
But, because he saw how the white people mistreated the black people, he lightened their palms. The mother said that God did this to show that it didn’t matter if black people were different because their work for God was just as important and valuable. His mother cries and leaves him to reflect on her words.
