After winning, the beauty queen from Iloilo City caught in the middle of a controversy. There were allegations that surfaced stating that she did not fairly compete in the pageant.
However, Rabiya fired back at this and stressed that she worked hard to be where she is now. Aside from this, an issue arose when her old photo surfaced. Many people pointed out that she looked different when she was younger.
Once again, Rabiya answered this by saying that she is beautiful then and now. It just so happened that she is now more aware of how she would look more pleasing.
Amid the bashing and the controversy in the pageant, which according to Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz is quite normal to happen every year, Rabiya Mateo received support from fans as well as from those who knew her before the MUP pageant.

“Years ago, she stayed at our boarding house for less than a semester while she was studying at the Iloilo Doctor’s College. She did not have money to pay for rent. She slept on the floor. Her roommates gave her a ‘banig’ so she would have something to sleep on. My mum asked her if she’ll be okay, and she said she’ll be fine. Through hard work, perseverance, and sheer grit, she graduated cum laude and now, the 2020 Miss Universe Philippines. Congratulations Rabiya Mateo! We’re proud of you!”
